Support for Special Feeding Situations

Lactation consultants perform thorough evaluations to identify and address a wide range of breastfeeding and lactation concerns.  They assess key factors such as the baby's latch, positioning, and oral anatomy, along with the mother's milk supply and nipple health.  Common  challenges they help manage include sore nipples, low milk supply, engorgement, mastitis, and issues related to tongue-tie.  Through personalised guidance and evidence-based interventions, we work with you to relieve discomfort, resolve feeding difficulties, and to support your successful breastfeeding and lactation experiences.

Education is a cornerstone of a lactation consultant's role. During pregnancy they offer prenatal classes that equip expectant parents with essential knowledge about breastfeeding and lactation - covering topics such as milk production, newborn feeding cues, and effective positioning techniques.  After birth, they continue to provide expert guidance, helping families establish and sustain breastfeeding and lactation while addressing and challenges they may emerge.  This ongoing education empowers parents with the confidence, skills, and support needed for a positive and informed breastfeeding and lactation journey.

Lactation consultants provide essential support to families facing unique feeding circumstances. This includes support for premature infants, multiples (twins or more), and babies with medical conditions requiring specialised feeding approaches. They also guide parents who choose to express milk exclusively or combine breastfeeding with bottle-feeding. By developing individualised feeding plans, they ensure that each family's specific needs and goals are heard and supported.
